constructed memories- rgi Kelly gallery, glasgow
Exhibition of paintings around the theme of memory.
Photographs are fixed images, fleeting moments captured forever. But how do the memories around the photos work? Are they constructed out of those visual reminders you have in albums, whilst others fade into the distance? Or do they inform and build up around the photos, opening up otherwise forgotten memories in the same way that smells, sounds, colours and stories can bring the past to the present in an instant?
Memories are never linear. Past, present and future all influence each other, moving, shifting. Memories of people, good in the past, tainted by current conflicts? Or bygone arguments fading away in light of reformed friendships?
This transience, the shifting and building of thoughts, reality and altered memory, is the body of my work, explored by layering, obscuring and revealing textures, colours and photographs.
The work is built up slowly, transparent layers allowing older thoughts to shine through. The shifting cacophony of the wax and paint moves as I create the images; resin capturing the result solidly, unmoveable once set, while ideas blur and change.
Semi transparent bricks, walls in your mind stopping you remembering, likewise can be consciously used to prevent certain thoughts moving or developing, memories being held back and shaped.
The materials influence each other. They react and merge like thoughts moving around, fleeting ideas floating away before their meaning can be grasped.
The street holds memories, traces of people who once walked by. A dropped fag end, footprints, litter, worn paving stones. An unnoticed canvas constantly evolving, layering and imprinting the memories of the people who pass. I collect images, drawings, objects, turning them into a snapshot over time, a collection of memories framed in my mind.
But these are just my thoughts, my memories being shaped now. More will be layered over and these images will disappear, in my mind and in your perception and thoughts. It is a never ending process moving in time.
